Term 4 Week 6: Walk Through: Introduction to Dialogue

SO we're onto dialogue shots!!!!! I've been waiting for this assignment for the last 10 months - long time - also I did not get taught this in my degree so very eager to learn.

Introduction to dialogue lecture was hosted by Delio Tramontozzi from ILM. He taught us how to find pieces of dialogue which are good for animation - generally you need changes of voice tone, pauses to break up the dialogue, changes of emotion, a good range of fast and slow rhythm and it must make sense to the viewer as the clips are short - our assignment is for 10 second maximum length.

We then moved onto how to go about designing how the shot will be setup. We must design who the character is (complete back story and personality traits) we must be able to answer the who, where, when, why and how questions and understand the emotional psych of our character. We must also understand the external and internal forces behind the characters actions. Our 3D animations are not to be just a puppet on a stage talking the line - this is boring and a poor design. Instead it's far more interesting to have our character in a physical situation, to have him appearing to be alive and living his life.

We also delved into the idea of subtext. This is what is happening inside the character's head as apposed to what he is saying. For instance a character could be commenting on a meal that his girlfriend has made him. It tastes terrible but he wants to be polite. So the dialogue line would be "Wow, this food is really nice Honey" but we would animate him trying to hide the fact that he's lying.

Anyway - on to my handin:
